Michell Martelly, President of Haiti |
News agencies report form Port-au-Prince that thousands of supporters danced and celebrated in the streets after Martelly’s victory was announced. The newly elected president did not offer any public statements but through Twitter he declared: “We are going to work for all Haitians. Together we can”
The country that Martelly is supposed to run and make it prosper is under a deep crisis, with hundreds of thousands of homeless form the January 2010 earthquake and a cholera outbreak that has stretched the almost inexistent resources of the island to the limit. Obviously the task ahead of the brand new president is far from being easy.
In the political arena, he will have to mediate between different currents; the influence of two former presidents who have just returned to the country, the old stereotypes of government corruption, the obvious meddling of the U.S. plus the cooperation agreements that Haiti already has with ALBA (Latin American Bolivarian Alternative) countries in the fields of health care and economy.
