Four medical scholarships were offered by Cuba to the Fijian Government for local students to study Bachelor of Surgery and Medicine (MBBS) in Cuba starting September 2011.

Parmesh Chand, permanent secretary of the Public Commission explained that the scholarships cover six years of study and one year of Spanish Language training. Fiji continues to explore opportunities to increase the number of doctors in the country which currently experiences a shortage in that field.
Last year, four other medical students from Fiji went to study at the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) in Havana.

Fiji and Cuba established diplomatic relations in 2003, and medicine has been an area in which both countries have successfully cooperated.
Every year, Cuba offers thousands of scholarships to students from underdeveloped countries to study medicine and other university careers at no cost to them or their countries.
