Dear Madam:
On November 6th and 7th, 2019, and for the 28th
time, Cuba will denounce at the United Nations the 57-year-old economic and
financial blockade imposed on the island on 1962 by the United States of
America. The world will be watching again as their representatives declare
their repulsion to this policy.
The Associations of Cubans Resident in Canada are proud that
the Canadian Government has traditionally voted against this obsolete and
failed attempt of the U.S. to resolve its diferendo with Cuba by punishing its
people, which has suffered severely and has been deprived of its right to a
better quality of life for more than half a century now.
Canada's vote against the blockade favors engagement, dialogue and negotiation between the parties involved. As Cuban-Canadians, we hope that again this time, this our second homeland, will honor once more its tradition of justice and respect for international laws.

The euphemistically called “embargo”, still implemented in
full force, and in recent weeks tightened by the Trump administration to an
extent never seen before with Title III of the Helms-Burton Law is negatively
affecting the most vulnerable sectors of Cuban society. The unparalleled
cruelty of denying patients and their relatives the necessary medicine for a
particular treatment, or the detrimental effect that the blockade as punishment
has had on the essential food segment, speak by themselves, or the attempt to
prevent oil tankers from carrying fuel to Cuban ports to create chaos in the
country; and this is just to mention three
examples of the adversity the people of Cuba endures day by day due to this
obsolete relic of the Cold War era. The harm inflicted on the people of Cuba
cannot be measured in words.
We also respectfully hope, that as promised, Canada
reinstate all services of the IRCC office at the Canadian Embassy in Havana,
the current situation results in extra costs and unnecessary hardships for
those immigrating to Canada. Our families are suffering the effect of this
measures, and it doesn’t help the good relations between our two countries.
Sincerely,
Association of Cuban Residents in Toronto “Juan Gualberto
Gómez”,
Association of Cuban Residents in Montreal “Somos Cuba”,
Comunidad Cubana en Canadá en Montreal,
Association of Cuban Residents in Ottawa Gatineau.
Canada must take the principled stand in defence of the Cuban people in opposition to the unjust, immoral and illegal U.S. blockade. It should also go one step further in recusing itself
ReplyDeleteand publicly denounce the efforts of the Lima Group in its efforts to destabilize the democratically elected Venezuelan government. Canada has no right interfering in the rights of other nations in choosing their governance model.
It is time that Canada denounce the illegitimate claims of the Lima group and the United States government and restore the harmonious relationship Canada previously enjoyed with Cuba. Are we not, like Cuba, a sovereign nation, or are we a puppet of the empire and malicious backroom deals? Please, do the right thing.
