CNC Statement
Hurricane Irma is one of the largest - if not the largest - storms to menace the Caribbean. As a Category 5 hurricane it has inflicted - and is - inflicting devastating damage on the region. Current forecasts place Cuba squarely in Hurricane Irma's trajectory, with the massive storm either making landfall or passing very close to the island's northern coast on Friday and Saturday.
We are confident that the Cuban people will overcome any challenges posed by Hurricane Irma. Cuba has a stellar Civil Defence system, whose preparedness to meet dangers posed by hurricanes is second to none. Havana has received numerous international accolades, with the United Nations declaring Cuba a “model in Hurricane risk management."
Inspired by Cuba’s immense and ongoing solidarity and generosity to the peoples of the world, the CNC stands ready to provide assistance to the heroic people of Cuba in overcoming any damage caused by Hurricane Irma. Towards this end, we stand prepared to launch a Hurricane Irma Relief Campaign for Cuba.
Previous Hurricane Relief campaigns - which Keith Ellis so ably coordinated - have been very successful: Ivan (2004), Dennis (2005), Katrina (2005), Wilma (2005), Gustave (2008), Ike (2008), Sandy (2012) and Matthew (2016). Canadians have always responded extremely positively, reflecting their deep respect for the people of Cuba, and what has been achieved in building a society centred on social justice, human dignity and internationalism.

¡Hasta la victoria siempre!
