Open letter to Canada's Foreign Minister
The Association of Cubans in Toronto “Juan
Gualberto Gómez”

Honorable

Minister

Dear Sir:
On October 27th,
2015, and for the 23rd time, Cuba will denounce at the United
Nations the 53 year old economic and financial blockade imposed on the island
on 1962 by the United States of America. The world will be watching again as
their representatives declare their repulsion to this policy.
The
Association of Cubans in Toronto “Juan Gualberto Gómez” is very proud that the
Canadian Government has traditionally voted against this obsolete and failed
attempt of the U.S. to resolve its diferendo with Cuba by punishing its people,
which has suffered severely and has been deprived of its right to a better
quality of life for 53 years now; Canada's vote against the blockade favors engagement, dialogue and negotiation
between the parties involved. As Cuban-Canadians, we hope that again this time,
this our second homeland, will honor once more its tradition of justice and
respect for international laws.
We are also
proud of the role that Canada played in the process that lead to the historical
announcements made on December 17th by both the presidents of Cuba
and the United States of America on reestablishing diplomatic relations after
more than a century of hostility.
The
euphemistically called “embargo”, still implemented in full force, has
negatively affected the most vulnerable sectors of Cuban society. The
unparalleled cruelty of denying patients and their relatives the necessary
medicine for a particular treatment, or the detrimental effect that the
blockade as punishment has had on the essential food segment, speak by
themselves; and this is just to mention two examples of the adversity the
people of Cuba endures day by day due to this obsolete relic of the Cold War era.
Sincerely,
Julio Fonseca
President,
Association of Cubans
in Toronto “Juan Gualberto Gómez”
